At Danoff Orthodontics, we are dedicated to providing our patients with the most effective orthodontic treatments which including space maintainers for cases where permanent teeth have not yet erupted and there is a "space" between two teeth.

Space maintainers are custom-made dental appliances that are used to hold the space created by a missing tooth or teeth. They can be removable or fixed and are designed to prevent other teeth from shifting into the gap left by the missing tooth.

Without a space maintainer, the adjacent teeth to the missing tooth can shift into the space left by the missing tooth, causing crowding, bite issues, and other orthodontic problems down the road.

Placing Space Maintainer

The process of placing a space maintainer typically involves taking impressions of the teeth to create a custom-fit appliance. The space maintainer is then cemented or attached to the teeth adjacent to the gap.

The length of time a space maintainer needs to be worn varies depending on the individual's needs.

FAQs About Space Maintainers

How do I know if my child needs a space maintainer?

Generally speaking, if one or more primary "baby" teeth have been lost prematurely before the permanent "adult" teeth are erupting, there may be a need for a space maintainer. The easiest way to determine if your child needs a space maintainer is through a comprehensive orthodontic evaluation at our office.

Are space maintainers uncomfortable?

Most of our patients adjust to their space maintainers within a few days, and they should not cause any significant discomfort.

How long does the process of placing a space maintainer take?

The process of placing a space maintainer typically takes between 30 minutes to an hour and can be done in a single visit.

Can my child still eat and brush their teeth normally with a space maintainer?

Yes, your child can still eat and brush their teeth normally with a space maintainer, although they should avoid certain sticky or hard foods that can damage or potentially remove the appliance.

How long does my child have to wear a space maintainer?

The duration of wearing a space maintainer can vary depending on your child's individual situation. However, in general, we recommend wearing space maintainers until your child's permanent tooth is ready to erupt. At this time, the permanent tooth will then take the place of the space maintainer.
